What is Platform 3: Study, Learn, Qualify?

Platform 3 is an online route to completing the Level 3 accredited qualification: Supporting Children and Young People’s Speech, Language and Communication. Developed by The Communication Trust, it supports the continuing professional development of those working with children and young people by boosting the knowledge and skills needed to effectively support all children's speech, language and communication development and identify those who are struggling.

The content was excellent, clear and all information was relevant.

In 2013-16 The Communication Trust received funding from the Department for Education to pilot Platform 3 and it has since been trialled and tested by many practitioners across the country with a large number successfully completing their award.

Practitioners from a wide range of backgrounds can gain an accredited qualification in this vitally important area completely online. This means that not only will you have access to all the information you need but can complete your assessment online too! Once enrolled, you’ll be allocated a tutor to guide and support you throughout and you can study at your own pace, around your work and family life.

What is involved in completing the qualification through Platform 3?
I like being able to work in the evening around my children, work and family commitments.

To successfully achieve the Award you must complete three units – two of which are mandatory and then you choose one from four options. These have been developed to appeal to a wide range of learners, so you’ll be able to choose something that’s just right for you and the children you work with!

Each unit consists of a number of assessed learning outcomes. You’ll have access to a full suite of learning materials, with helpful guides and videos on every page as well as portfolio assessment tasks and ‘check your learning’ activities. These activities will enable you to put knowledge into practice and prepare for assessed portfolio tasks

In order to gain accreditation, you must develop and submit a portfolio of evidence demonstrating that you have met the assessment criteria.

What are the benefits of completing the qualification online?

If you are a learner...

  • You are able to study towards an accredited qualification at your own pace and at a time that’s convenient for you. You may wish to do more hours some weeks and less on others; it is completely up to you!
  • You will be able to choose from six units of professionally produced, quality assured online learning materials and portfolio tasks for assessment – these appeal to varying learning styles and can be accessed on PC’s, laptops and tablets.
  • You will have access to an online discussion area where you can contact your tutor; online forums are also available offering peer to peer support with tutor input where appropriate.
  • Platform 3 allows you to upload your work to the online system for your tutor to access and provide specific feedback to pieces of work aligned to the assessment criteria.
  • The application process and cost for each provider will vary so please contact the training provider directly to find out how to apply and get started with your qualification.

If you are an employer...

  • Online learning can be more cost effective than traditional face-to-face learning as there are no classroom taught elements, keeping associated costs to a minimum.
  • Learners are encouraged to complete activities throughout the qualification which allows them to embed their learning back into practice.
  • By training your staff in this vital area, you will increase their knowledge, skills and confidence in identifying and supporting children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). This will help to minimise the impact that an SLCN may have on a child or young person.
I’m interested in undertaking the Level 3 Award through Platform 3, what are the next steps?

We are delighted that you’re interested in undertaking the Level 3 Award in Supporting Children and Young People’s Speech, Language and Communication.

Although The Communication Trust worked with City & Guilds to develop the Award and write the supporting materials, we are not a training provider.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to complete the course. It was brilliant.

We have been working closely with training providers who are offering the Award using Platform 3 either entirely online or as a blended approach. A blended learning approach combines an online and face to face approach. Some training providers will allows learners to complete their assessed portfolio tasks and accreditation online via Platform 3, alongside offering some face to face support. This support may take the form of training days, study days, or peer to peer support sessions.

A full list of the training providers who offer Platform 3 and links to their websites can be found on the Interested in Platform 3? page.
